Trail sledding at Bradbury Mountain State Park

What is trail sledding (also called backcountry sledding) you ask? It's heart pumping aerobic activity, adrenaline rush, family togetherness and breathtaking beauty in the free outdoors. It's simply awesome and it has become our family's preferred outdoor adventure for winter.

I wrote about it last winter when we first discovered this activity. Our family gives it a hearty 10 thumbs up.

And if the activity weren't enjoyable enough, during yesterday's excursion we had the privilege of meeting 4 youngish (younger than us) adults. They were daring enough, as young outdoorsy types often are, to take us up on our offer to try out our rockets for a ride. Meeting fellower adventurers is so much fun. And when they invite you, as their friends, to come visit the camp where they work to climb on the indoor climbing wall, well that's pretty cool too.

The winter woods, meeting new people, having fun adventures (think Sound of Music) "these are a few of our favorite things".

It was a very good day.

PS. You can be sure the photographer was sledding too, there just aren't any photos to prove it.

winter magic & adventure

Contentment does not describe my feelings after yesterday's family time sledding at a local state park. Combine physical activity, lots of belly laughter, winter's beauty and spending time with my favorite people and you start to get a sense for how I fe

Looks like an absolute blast

Looks like an absolute blast - I wonder how a good dose of bouncing down a hill on a sled would affect this body's creaks and groans? Might be the best adjustment or treatment going - or maybe....? Think I better stick with x-country skiing and hiking for my winter snow sports, but so happy for your wonderful day in the woods.

I've never heard the term

I've never heard the term "back country sledding"-- I love it! We sled like this most often-- hiking through the woods looking for the perfect "run" in the trees or dunes:) A helmet and a sled-- not a lot of gear for such great times:)!

Back country sleds

We actually have sleds designed specifically for this sport; so we can maneuver through the trees. Otherwise I think it would be a tad dangerous as most "neighborhood hill" sleds can't be steered too well. We bought ours from the Mad River Rocket company.

BC sledding

This is great. I did this all the time in middle school in the late 80's. We would winter hike the Adirondacks and sled down. We used a sled, which I believe is still available, called a We-bob. It was very small-just a seat with two handles-so you could easily strap it to your pack. And as important, you could stop just by putting your feet down. I love that you are doing this with your kids-its inspirational to me. I hope to do the same with my two one day.
